Newcastle kept their narrow lead at the top of the table by beating Wigan 2-1 at St James’ Park. Dwight Gayle netted his 22nd goal of the season to put the hosts in front just before the break, but the Latics pulled level early in the second half - Michael Jacobs with the equaliser. The visitors could not hold on though, as Matt Ritchie made it 2-1 soon after by heading home his own rebound. The Magpies held on to claim all three points and remain at the top of the Championship table.
Brighton and Hove Albion 1-0 Blackburn Rovers
Brighton had to fight hard, but they picked up a valuable three points against Blackburn to keep the pressure on league leaders Newcastle. It took until midway through the second half before the Seagulls took the lead, Glenn Murray converting his 19th goal of the season. That was enough for the South Coast club to claim the victory, and inflict the first defeat on Blackburn since Tony Mowbray was named manager.
Rotherham United 0-1 Fulham
Fulham won 1-0 at Rotherham to move into the playoff places - and condemn the Millers to relegation to League One. Sone Aluke scored the only goal of the game from close range, to ensure Slavisa Jokanovic’s men remain in the hunt for Premier Leaguefootball.
Ipswich Town 1-1 Birmingham City
Jonathan Grounds converted from close range to hand Birmingham the lead 10 minutes after the break, as Ipswich and the Blues played out a goalless first half. However, Grant Ward equalised with 15 minutes remaining to play out a 1-1 draw at Portman Road.
Bristol City failed to build on their excellent 4-0 win over Huddersfield two weeks ago, as they lost 2-0 at Brentford. Sergi Canos and Lasse Vibe both struck in the first half to claim the Bees an easy three points.
Huddersfield Town 0-0 Burton Albion
Huddersfield fell further behind the top two as Jackson Irvine scored a 96th minute for Burton to claim all three points for the Brewers at the John Smith’s Stadium. The Terriers were wasteful for much of the game, and frustration got to them late on; Dean Whitehead was dismissed after being shown two yellow cards. The game seemed to be ebbing to a 0-0 draw, but Irvine popped up in the dying stages to covert Marvin Sordell’s cross - and inflict a rare defeat on the hosts.
Jonathan Kodjia scored a brace as Aston Villa beat Norwich - who ended the game with 10 men. The Ivory Coast international scored 25 minutes in, with Ivo Pinto shown a red card in the final 10 minutes to compound the Canaries’ misery further. There was still time for Kodjia to add his second before the final whistle was blown.
Preston North End 1-1 Nottingham Forest
Mark Warburton remains in the hunt for his first win as Nottingham Forest boss, as Aiden McGeady cancelled out Britt Assombalonga’s opening goal ensure Preston and Forest shared the spoils ina 1-1 draw at Deepdale.
Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-1 Cardiff City
Wolves scored the first goal of the afternoon, Danny Batth heading home 12 minutes in, though the lead remained for just minutes, as Kenneth Zohore levelled with a header of his own. Batth converted another header just before the break as the hosts retook the lead, and the win was confirmed in the dying stages - Helder Costa netting to round off a fine afternoon for Paul Lambert’s side.
